Mile End is a restaurant that does the old school thing really well, establishing itself a couple of years ago on a busy corner. Operated by siblings Grace and Nelson Oliveira, who grew up in what was and still is to some extent a Portuguese neighbourhood, the room does a brisk business of equal parts local families with kids and well-heeled adults. With dinner classics and changing lunch specials , it’s an everybody-everyday-anytime sort of spot, where the charcoal grill in the front window leads to tile and wood interior with a red accent wall and spherical fishing net lights. Mason jars of the house hot sauce, dark red and murky at the bottom with mounds of chili seeds, are available for sale on the counter next to the cash. It’s great stuff, and it turns out the recipe belongs to Grace’s father in law, one of the Portuguese chicken pioneers at Janos. You may want to take some home.
What mattered more was that the grilled chicken, that standard golden churrasqueira, was delicious.
